Shrimping Boats on the Water in Elliot Bay

Shrimping Boats on Elliot Bay

I'm new to living right on Elliot Bay so when I woke up chilly May morning, I had to wonder WTF was going on. There were tiny little vessels ALL over the place in Elliot Bay. Did I miss something? Did SeaFair start early?

My quick and dirty Google-Fu tells me this is due to the start of the spot shrimp fishing season in Puget Sound. This event draws a lot of enthusiasts, as spot shrimp are a highly sought-after catch. Some of them can get up to 9 inches long. Gross. Shrimps is bugs.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife manages the timing of this season to maximize opportunities while ensuring the shrimp population remains sustainable. People from all over the area head out on their boats to take advantage of the short window to catch these sea bugs.

On this day they were allowed to fish from 9am-1pm. Is it still called fishing? Shrimping. You do you, guys. Hope you had fun doing it! Definitely wasn't the weather you hoping for though, I'm guessing?
